
Ein LED-Würfel fehlte mir noch in meiner Sammlung. Bei meiner Nixie-Uhr verwendete ich zur Ansteuerung sog. Schieberegister vom Typ 74HC595N. Diese „lädt“ man in Serie mit digitalen Bits und das Schieberegister gibt diese dann parallel aus. Auf diese Weise kann man mit wenigen zur Verfügung stehenden Pins sehr viele digitale Ausgangspins umsetzen. Beim LED-Würfel wollte ich aber bewusst auf Schieberegister verzichten und es so einfach wie möglich halten. Dies auch deshalb, damit der LED-cube erstens für Schüler leichter nachvollziehbar und zweitens auch einfacher zu bauen wird.
Bei einem Würfel mit n LEDs pro Seite benötigt man ja insgesamt n ^3 LEDs, macht etwa bei n = 8 bereits beachtliche 512 LEDs. Kein Arduino liefert ohne Schieberegister auch nur ansatzweise derart viele digitale pins. Bei n = 5 sind es „nur“ noch 125 LEDs. Aber auch diese kann man mangels digitaler pins nicht alle einzeln/direkt ansteuern.
Deshalb verwendet man folgenden Trick: Man schließt alle 25 übereinanderliegende LEDs an je einen digitalen pin. Zudem steuert man jedes Stockwerk über einen Mosfet ebenfalls mit einem digitalen pin. Macht dann in Summe 25 + 5 = 30 digitale pins. Der Arduino Mega verfügt insgesamt über 70 digitale pins, was also bestens passen würde…

Möchte man also zum Beispiel die 12-te LED im 3-ten Stockwerk ansprechen, steuert man den 12ten vertikalen LED-Strang an und zudem das 3-te Stockwerk. Auf diese Weise kann man Stockwerk für Stockwerk nacheinander abhandeln und jeweils alle 25 LEDs einen Stockwerks gezielt ansprechen. Diese Vorgehensweise nennt man Multiplexing (oft auch als Zeitmultiplex-Verfahren). Diese Methode nutzt die Trägheit des menschlichen Auges, denn wenn man die einzelnen Stockwerke des LED-Würfels schnell (!) genug ansteuert, erscheint es dem Auge nicht wie eine hintereinander abgearbeitete Ausgabe sondern wie eine zeitgleiche Ausgabe. Dafür darf halt ein einzelnes Stockwerk nicht viel länger als 5 ms beleuchtet werden, denn sonst würde das Auge das Multiplexing als störendes Flackern wahrnehmen…

Über jeden der fünf IRL510-Logik-Mosfets laufen also alle 25 LEDs einen einzelnen Stockwerks ab. Bei rund 15 mA pro LED kann dann die Gesamtstromstärke maximal 375 mA betragen. Dies schafft der IRL510 aber locker. Man sollte aber wirklich nur ein sog. logic-level-Mosfets verwenden, welche bei 5 V Steuerspannung am Gate auch wirklich voll durchschalten!

Letztendlich viel die Wahl auf helle, weiße LEDs mit 15000 mcd bei einer Stromstärke von 20 mA. Für die Vorwiderstände wählte ich einen Wert von 120 Ω. Bei einer Flussspannung von 3.3 V liefert dies mit den 5 V vom Arduino eine Stromstärke von I = (5 – 3.3) / 120 = 14 mA.

Zum Löten der LEDs, auch wenn es „nur“ 125 Stück sind, empfiehlt es sich, eine Schablone anzufertigen. Dazu habe ich einfach in ein kleines Holzbrett 25 Löcher mit 5 mm Durchmesser im Abstand von konkret 15 mm gebohrt:

Die Kathoden einer Reihe verbinde ich alle direkt miteinander. Deshalb darauf achten, dass der Lochabstand mit der Länge der Kathoden gut harmoniert!

Insgesamt benötigte ich 5 Ebenen mit je 25 LEDs. Verlötet wurde alles auf meinem höchstprofessionellen Labortisch 😉


Ich verwende nach wie vor bleihältiges Lötzinn, da ich zum Glück noch einen riesigen Vorrat davon besitze:

Für das Löten des gesamten Würfels benötigte ich dann doch ca. 2 h, hier die einzelnen Zwischenergebnisse:

Für die vertikalen Verdrahtungen und zur Stabilisierung der einzelnen Ebenen verwendete ich 1 mm starken silberbeschichteten Kupferdraht. Ein 0.6er Draht hätte aber wohl auch/besser gepasst…

Und weil ich gerade im Lötmodus war, habe ich gleich die 30 Steuerkabel (25 davon mit Vorwiderstand) gelötet. Dazu verwendete ich verschiedenfärbige Kabel (rot, gelb, grün, blau, schwarz) und Stiftleisten:



Nun zum Verdrahtung bzw. dem Arduino-Programm:

Ich verwende für die LEDs 25 digitale Pins der unteren Steckleiste des Arduino Mega und die digitalen pins 2 bis 6 auf der Seite für die Ansteuerung der 5 Mosfets:

Die LEDs nummeriere ich von links oben nach rechts unten durch mit led_1 bis led_25. Die digitalen Pins spreche ich dann im Arduino-sketch auch so an, zum Beispiel digitalWrite(led_2, HIGH).
Das Arduino-Programm und die Elektronik mit Mosfets habe ich mir gänzlich selbst ausgedacht und NICHT auf KI oder fertige Vorlagen aus dem Internet zurückgegriffen. Denn ich besitze nach wie vor den großen Ehrgeiz, möglichst alles selbst umzusetzen. Und nur so lernt man erstens etwas und zweitens kann man dann auch nur so auf seine Projekte stolz sein. Würde ich auf ein von der KI binnen 10 sek ausgespucktes Programm zurückgreifen, wäre der Lerneffekt nahezu 0 und auch das wahre Erfolgserlebnis würde ausbleiben. So weiß ich auch ganz genau, was das Programm wo macht und ich bei Problemen ansetzen muss. Bei einem gänzlich übernommenen Code wäre dies nicht der Fall…

Ich habe die Steuerung der 25 digitalen Pins für die einzelnen Ebenen auch so visuell angeordnet, dass die Position des Befehls mit der Position der angesprochenen LED übereinstimmt. Auf diese Weise hat man gleich den Überblick, welche LED auf HIGH bzw. LOW gesetzt werden muss:

Wie schon oben geschrieben darf eine einzelne Ebene nur ca. 5 ms lang angesprochen werden, ansonsten würde das Auge ein Flimmern wahrnehmen. Für die 5 Stockwerke benötigt das Arduino-Programm also lediglich rund 25 ms. Würde man nach dieser kurzen Zeit bereits ein neues Bild ansteuern, wäre das Auge völlig überfordert und man würde wohl nur 125 helle LEDs wahrnehmen. Deshalb lasse ich jedes einzelne Bild eine einstellbare Zeit, zum Beispiel 0.6 sek, aufleuchten. Innerhalb dieser Zeit durchläuft das Programm die einzelnen Ebenen mehrfach, bei rund 25 ms pro Durchlauf konkret dann ca. 600 / 25 = 24-mal. Erst nach diesen einstellbaren 0.6 sek (dies mache ich durch eine millis()-Zeitabfrage innerhalb einer while-Schleife) kommt dann das nächste Bild an die Reihe…
Programmiert habe ich bis jetzt folgende 5 Animationen:
- wachsender/schrumpfender Kantenwürfel
- x-Ebene mit Bewegung in x-Richtung
- y-Ebene mit Bewegung in y-Richtung
- z-Ebene mit Bewegung in z-Richtung
- Sternenhimmel mit Zufallsgenerator
Beim Sternenhimmel benötigte ich allerdings ein array mit 125 Komponenten, denn nur so verfügte ich über das Wissen/Gedächtnis, welche LED gerade zufällig eingeschaltet werden soll und welche nicht. Nach z.B. 0.6 sek erfolgte eine neue zufällige Zuordnung der 125 LEDs…
Damit auch nur ca. 33% aller LEDs beim Sternenhimmel an sind, lasse ich mir zunächst eine Zufallszahl 0, 1 oder 2 geben. Wird die 2 ausgegeben, ändere ich sie zu 0 ab. Auf diese Weise erhalte ich in 66% aller Fälle eine 0 (LOW, LED aus) und nur in 33% der Fälle eine digitale 1 (HIGH, LED an).
